Junior Underwriter - Richmond
We’re hiring for a Junior Underwriter role supporting casualty underwriting , with a focus on Commercial General Liability (CGL) and Excess Liability . This position is designed for underwriters who want deeper exposure to portfolio profitability, coverage analysis, and underwriting decision support—while working closely with underwriting leadership and brokers.

A Junior Underwriter in casualty underwriting supports core underwriting workflows: reviewing submissions, assessing exposures, validating underwriting requirements, and documenting decision rationale. You’ll help ensure the underwriting team is pricing and structuring coverage appropriately, while keeping the file audit-ready and aligned with carrier guidelines.
- Collect, review, and analyze submissions to evaluate risk acceptability and exposure profile
- Assess liability drivers, coverage needs, and underwriting requirements that influence pricing
- Provide leadership with clear recommendations on whether to approve, decline, or modify an application
- Support pricing and structuring decisions based on risk quality and guideline alignment
- Follow up with brokers to obtain missing documentation and close outstanding items
- Keep detailed documentation, notes, and decision rationale within underwriting files
- Assist leadership in maintaining a profitable casualty book of business
- Support negotiations on terms, conditions, and pricing to ensure long-term performance
- Develop a strong understanding of:
- Common casualty coverage forms and endorsements
- Carrier guidelines and underwriting appetite boundaries
- How policy language relates to loss exposure
- Work within a collaborative environment to align risk strategy and underwriting approach across stakeholders
- 3–5 years of underwriting experience in Commercial General Liability (CGL) and/or Excess Liability
- Working understanding of policy provisions and how they connect to risk and loss exposure
- Strong work ethic and ownership mentality
- Highly organized, responsive, and deadline-aware
- Analytical, detail-oriented, and steady judgment
- Comfortable communicating with brokers/clients via phone
- Curious, coachable, and motivated by growth
- Willing to support ad hoc projects as needed
- Team-oriented and collaborative
- College degree not required (preferred)
- Insurance designations not required (preferred)
