Tax Advisor | High Net Worth Individual Tax & Planning | Hybrid (2 days/week WFH) | Boston, MA
Position Summary
We are seeking a Tax Advisor to provide comprehensive tax return preparation and proactive planning support for an assigned book of high net worth individual tax clients. This role blends technical tax execution with high-touch client advisory—supporting tax analysis, planning initiatives, and coordination with Trustees and internal stakeholders.
The Tax Advisor handles sensitive, confidential information and maintains frequent client contact. Integrity, discretion, and sound judgment are essential, along with the ability to communicate tax strategies clearly and collaborate across teams to ensure planning solutions are complete, compliant, and client-ready.
Key Responsibilities
Individual Tax Preparation & Review (HNW Focus)
- Prepare complex individual income tax returns for high net worth clients with accuracy, quality, and timeliness.
- Review tax returns prepared by colleagues to ensure consistency, completeness, and quality standards.
- Analyze and process quarterly estimated tax payments for assigned individual accounts.
- Maintain current knowledge of individual and gift tax matters; apply guidance to client scenarios and planning recommendations.
Client Advisory, Planning & Trustee Collaboration
- Meet with clients and Trustees to present financial and tax planning strategies and explain implications clearly.
- Identify tax planning opportunities for individuals and families, including proactive planning around life events and investment activity.
- Partner with Trustees and internal teams to support multi-year planning and implementation coordination.
- Surface taxable events with potential legal implications and collaborate with appropriate stakeholders for proper handling.
Cross-Functional Partnership & Compliance
- Collaborate with General Counsel, Trust Administration, and other internal teams to ensure tax planning initiatives are comprehensive, compliant, and aligned with broader client strategies.
- Support department-wide tax initiatives, process improvements, and planning programs that elevate client outcomes and quality.
Mentorship, Process Improvement & Technology Enablement
- Mentor junior Tax Advisors and contribute to team development and best practices.
- Utilize tax research, planning, and preparation applications (e.g., BNA, Profx) to deliver defensible, well-supported tax positions.
- Partner with Tax Team members, Business Analysts, and Application Developers to improve workflows, leverage technology effectively, and strengthen process efficiency.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree (business/accounting concentration and/or taxation) and/or Certified Financial Planning (CFP) required.
- 7+ years of experience in an individual tax return production environment.
- 5+ years of client-facing experience involving individual client advisory, financial planning, and analysis.
- Current, high-level knowledge of individual and gift tax matters.
- Strong discretion and professionalism handling confidential client information.
- Solid understanding of investment management concepts and their tax implications.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with fiduciary and estate tax returns.
- Prior experience collaborating with Trustees and trust administration teams in a private wealth, family office, or trust/estate environment.
